Fix it

Fix Your Espresso Machine: Start With the Symptom

Look before you open anything. Note what still works, then find the fix for your machine. If a stop condition shows up, that's where the repair shop starts.

Check first

Before You Diagnose: What to Check First

Stop conditions

  • A breaker trips more than once
  • Smoke or a hot-plastic smell
  • Water inside the case

Unplug it and go to when to stop.

Machine code and voltage

On the rating plate, usually under the base. Fixes differ by version and market.

What still works

Pump sound, heating light, steam, hot water. Note which ones you still get.

What changed

New beans, a descale, a mod, a house move, a long pause. The fault usually follows the change.

Symptoms

Common Symptoms

No Water or Weak Flow

  • Tank seated and full, intake tube in the water
  • Pump runs but nothing comes: prime it
  • Still nothing: solenoid or scale

Low Pressure

  • Grind finer and check the dose
  • Basket and group gasket
  • OPV setting, then the pump

Stuck Modes and Short Shots

  • Stuck in brew or steam: thermostat or switch
  • Short shots: tank, pump, scale
  • Won't grind: that's the grinder, not the machine

When to stop

When to Stop and Call a Technician

Every guide marks the steps that open the machine, touch mains power or hot water. These are the signs to stop before that.

Stop and call a technician when

  • A breaker, GFCI or RCD trips more than once.
  • You smell hot insulation or see smoke.
  • Water is inside the case near wiring.
  • The boiler or a fitting leaks under pressure.
  • The manual and your machine don't match one to one.

Before you open anything

  • Unplug the machine and let the boiler cool.
  • Open the steam valve to release pressure.
  • Photograph every connector before you unplug it.
  • Work on a dry counter with the tank out.
How we write

How We Put These Guides Together

Each fix is written for one machine and version and says which. Procedures follow the manufacturer's manual where one exists. Steps that open the case or touch mains power are flagged before you start.

FAQ

Espresso Machine Troubleshooting FAQ

Is it worth repairing?

If the fault is a gasket, a scale blockage, a switch or a thermostat, yes. These are cheap parts. If the boiler or the control board has failed, compare the repair quote with the price of the machine.

How often should I service it?

Follow the maintenance table above. Most faults on these machines come from scale and old gaskets, and both have a schedule.
